From July 5-20, 2008, the NMC leadership team of CEO Larry Johnson and Vice Presidents Rachel Smith and Alan Levine will be in Australia establishing a new phase of the Horizon Project and meeting with colleagues at our five Australian NMC member organizations. Look for a string of news stories and podcasts from this tour.

Collaborating Without Email?

The NMC's listserv for our members, the NMCTAB, is frequently rated high in our surveys as a valuable service... but we are sure no one would mind getting information in fewer email messages. One effort we have been taking to better organize the discussions is to provide summaries of the more active discussions posted to the NMC web site.

Often, our members are looking for specific kinds of software or practices used at other institutions. While this information can be collected from email responses it is a tedious cut and paste operation, and generates a flood of email responses.

VISION 2020: Digital Ubiquity & University Transformation

The University of Cincinnati and Apple are hosting Vision 2020 the first week of August. The theme for the event is "Digital Ubiquity & University Transformation".

The conference will provide the opportunity for institutional leaders and faculty from around the country to share ideas and best practices about digital ubiquity in higher education. For anyone interested in integrating notebooks, iPhones or iPod touch devices into their campus environment, this is the conference to attend.

Featured speakers include former Maine Governor Angus King, the University of Cincinnati President Nancy Zimpher, dean and CIO leadership panels, NMC CEO Larry Johnson and KnowledgeWorks CEO Chad Wick addressing "Emerging Technology Trends: Shaping the Future of HIgher Education", and over 25 other college and university presentations. University and college are encouraged to bring teams of 3 or more.

Student Video Contest on Freedom

The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is teaming up with Apple, to provide college students across the United States with the opportunity to share how they define freedom. Teams of college students can create and submit a short video (3 minutes or less) expressing the qualities, importance, and impact of freedom in their lives, today.

Through their submissions, students will connect with people around the world to share their ideas about Freedom and become facilitators in a very important, global dialogue concerning some of society’s most critical issues. Creating Freedom Awareness—at a time when we need it most—is, perhaps, the 21st Century’s greatest challenge.

NMC Announces 2008 Center of Excellence Award Recipients

At the 2008 NMC Summer Conference , the NMC today announced recipients of the 2008 NMC Center of Excellence Award. The award, the highest honor bestowed by the NMC, recognizes demonstrated excellence and outstanding achievement in the application of technology to learning or creative expression.

Symbolized by a specially struck medallion suspended in a translucent obelisk, the Center of Excellence Award has been designed purposefully to make it distinct from other award or recognition programs. Colleges do not compete for the award, nor is it granted within predefined categories. The selection process is based on the MacArthur Awards, and like that program, the nominators and others involved in the selection process remain anonymous as a core principle of the program. They are chosen from organizations both within and outside the NMC, and represent a considerable diversity of knowledge.
