The NMC Symposium on the Evolution of Communication
December 4-5, 2007
The Call for Proposals for the Symposium on the Evolution of Communication is now closed. Proposals for presentations for this special 2-day, live online event, was held December 4-5, 2007 in the virtual world of Second Life, were solicited from October 18 through November 5. The NMC's recent release of Social Networking, the “Third Place,” and the Evolution of Communication is intended to help inform and illuminate both the call for proposals and the Symposium itself.
NMC Conversations (Podcast): Now with Transcripts
Posted July 25th, 2007 by Alan LevineWe are ramping up production and a schedule for more episodes of our NMC Conversations, a podcast series started a few months ago to highlight NMC projects and bringing in guests from our membership and community. We were really inspired by the ETS Podcasts published by Cole Camplese and colleagues at Penn State University. Their style is lively and informative, and we can only hope to emulate it.
New Media Means New Choices

Early activities in the exploration of new media opportunities involved the invention of new media modes, forms and genres. These have included wikis, blogs, videologs, text messaging, email, hypermedia, and more. These representations have taken advantage of media-rich elements, interconnectivity, and social participation. Given the establishment of these "new media" uses, the challenge has now become the development of an expressive constituency that is competent in these new media forms, and, more importantly, that is capable of choosing which of these is important for what context.
