Ball State Digital Artists Showcased in Second Life

ball-state-art.jpg

Imagine flying over a pyramid shaped boat as a variety of tones from the engine combine to create a melody. That is just what visitors will get when they interact with the new virtual art collection created by Ball State University faculty in Second Life.

John Fillwalk, Ball State associate professor of art, and director of the Institute for Digital Intermedia Arts and Animation (IDIAA), is the lead artist on a project that will be showcased in Second Life beginning Sunday, Aug. 24 2008, and run through September.

The NMC offered Fillwalk and the IDIAA the chance to transform an entire Second Life island with interactive virtual art. The collection, which will be up for a month, is part of a series of installations hosted by NMC throughout the year.

Shared Knowledge Project

j0439359.gif

Hosted at NMC, this project is a collaborative wiki on creating digital, shared knowledge architectures. It began as a research project to search the Blogosphere and do a social network analysis (SNA) to find community-trusted experts on shared knowledge, digital collaboration, and new e-tools for all-the-time learning. The researcher then contacted these global experts and asked open-ended questions to discover current, state-of-art practices in collaborative knowledge creation and management.

Responses were used to create a shared wiki that summarize these trusted bloggers' views on what is now known.  Of the experts located via the SNA, one was NMC's own Alan Levine - and SNA's can't lie!

Visit the NMC shared knowledge wiki for more information, or to contribute to what is now known about emergence-based digital knowledge.

The Art of Botanical Illustration

botillus.jpg

The Art of Botanical Illustration is a wonderfully laid out Pachyderm presentation that explores the history and development of botanical art through the years. It was not always possible or practical to transport plants, thus it was left up to artists to document and record findings from explorers. The University of Minnesota has gone above and beyond in describing the collaboration of art and science in the facet of botanical illustration.
